Roast food build: grow Scavenger Blade as you eat
Build a working food engine with Roast and Scavenger Blade, then add recovery, a stronger finisher or a limited-use area payoff.
Demo build 23718635The short answer
Use Roast to land a killing blow and create Toasty. With Scavenger Blade in hand, eat the Toasty before your next blade attack so you can use its eating growth. Start with those two permanent cards; add other payoffs only after food production works.

Find a source, a payoff and a setup attack
Core · food source
Roast1 energy · Combat
- Deal 3 damage
- On a fatal hit: Create 1 Toasty
Pay 1 energy and deal 3 base damage. A fatal hit creates Toasty. Reserve it for an enemy you can finish; a nonfatal Roast does not make the food.

Core · repeatable growth
Scavenger Blade1 energy · Combat
- Deal 5 damage
- When you eat: Increase damage by 1
Pay 1 energy for 5 base damage. Its eating trigger adds 1 damage. Keep it available while resolving food, and check its current value before attacking.
Full effects, properties & growth →
Flexible · setup damage
Stab1 energy · Combat
- Deal 4 damage
The base 4-damage hit can put an enemy into Roast range. Replace this role with damage you already have; do not insist on finding another Stab.

Generated food · not a required reward
Toasty0 energy · Combat
- Heal 5
- Consume this card
Food
A base Toasty costs 0, heals 5 and consumes itself. Roast creates it during combat, so the builder preset contains the source rather than a Toasty you must find.
Full effects, properties & growth →A simple turn with base values
Suppose an enemy has 7 health, no damage-changing status, and you have Stab and Roast with 2 energy available. Stab deals 4, leaving 3; Roast can then finish it and create Toasty.
If Scavenger Blade is in hand when you eat and its normal trigger applies, one eating trigger changes its base damage from 5 to 6. Playing it afterwards still costs 1 energy. The Stab–Roast sequence already spent 2, so do not assume the third attack is affordable.
- Read enemy health and your current card values. Growth and enemy statuses can change the arithmetic.
- Keep enough energy for Roast after the setup attack.
- Use the setup hit without taking the kill away from Roast.
- Finish with Roast and confirm the Toasty is in hand.
- Eat for the healing and eating trigger, then check the blade’s new damage.
- Play the blade only if you can pay for it and its target is useful. Otherwise end the turn with a plan for the next hand.
Build the engine in stages
| Stage | What to do | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Only Roast found | Use it for food and recovery while keeping ordinary attacks | Collecting several eating payoffs with no extra way to make food. |
| Roast and Scavenger Blade found | Land finishers and grow the blade through eating | Spending every kill on the blade when you still need food. |
| Food is reliable | Add a useful Kitchen modification or a stronger food-producing attack | Changing the whole deck to chase one particular upgrade. |
| You need a group finisher | Consider Left To Rot as a limited-use addition | Treating it as a replacement for every ordinary attack. |
Add support for the problem you actually have
Exploration recovery
Rest2 energy · Exploration
- Heal 10
- Increase this card’s healing by 3
Camp
Rest heals 10 at base, increases its own healing by 3 and costs 2 exploration energy. It needs Camp space. It supports recovery between fights; it cannot substitute for a combat action.
Full effects, properties & growth →
Optional · area damage
Left To Rot1 energy · Combat
- Deal 6 damage to all enemies
- When you eat: Increase damage by 1
Linger · Exhaust · Uses 4
Its base damage is 6 to all enemies and eating adds 1. It also has Linger, Exhaust and 4 Uses. Save remaining uses for fights where the area hit matters.
Full effects, properties & growth →
Alternative · stronger food finisher
Flambee2 energy · Combat
- Deal 8 damage
- On a fatal hit: Create 2 Gourmet Toasty
It costs 2 and has a larger base hit than Roast, creating Gourmet Toasties on a fatal hit. Take the extra up-front cost into account before replacing a cheap finisher.
Full effects, properties & growth →Fix a failed loop
| What went wrong | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Roast hit but no food appeared | Check whether Roast actually dealt the fatal hit. |
| Scavenger Blade did not grow as expected | Check the card’s availability and its current eating trigger before eating; do not infer a trigger from a card sitting elsewhere. |
| You ran out of energy before the finisher | Plan the full sequence before playing the setup attack. |
| Healing came too late | Choose a kill you can complete now. Do not delay survival just to grow a favourite attack. |
| Left To Rot disappeared or cannot be replayed | Check its Uses and Exhaust restrictions separately. |
Record the core and what changed
Open the core in the builder, then replace the flexible setup and recovery slots with the cards in your run. Add optional Kitchen or area-damage cards only if you actually used them.
In the run notes, list food production, added triggers and the ending Scavenger Blade damage. Mark the deck complete only if you entered the whole ending deck. A failed attempt is useful too: identify the hand where the food or energy chain stopped.
